I’m excited to share that I was recently featured in the Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO) blog in celebration of their 37th anniversary!

During that interview, I reflected on two of the most important lessons I’ve learned: the value of recurring revenue and the power of focusing on one thing.
By the time I was 37, I had come to understand how critical recurring revenue is for long-term business sustainability. I learned this during the Entrepreneurial Masters Program at MIT, where I was introduced to John Warrillow’s book The Automatic Customer.
This concept of building recurring revenue completely shifted my approach to business. Having consistent, predictable revenue allows you to focus on growth, plan for the future, and make better decisions without the pressure of chasing the next big sale.
In addition to recurring revenue, one of the most impactful lessons I’ve learned is the power of focusing on one thing at a time. For me, that has been meditation.
“The goal of meditation isn’t to control your thoughts, it’s to stop letting them control you.” — Unknown
Practicing meditation consistently has brought so much clarity and peace to my life, helping me show up better for my business, my family, and myself. This daily habit of focus has proven to be invaluable in all areas of my life.
“The thing about meditation is you become more and more you.” — David Lynch
If you’re looking to bring more focus and stability into your business, I encourage you to think about how recurring revenue could support your goals.
Below is a step-by-step guide to help you explore this idea and focus on one key area for lasting growth.
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Focus on One Thing and Build Recurring Revenue
1. Choose Your Focus Area
First, decide on the most important area to focus on in your business. If you don’t already have a recurring revenue model, consider starting there. What products or services can you offer consistently to your customers on a subscription basis?
2. Design Your Recurring Revenue Model
Think about the details: What will you offer, how frequently will customers be billed, and what value will they receive each cycle? Consider subscription services, maintenance plans, or repeat-purchase products.
3. Set Clear Revenue Goals
Establish both short- and long-term revenue targets. How much monthly recurring revenue (MRR) would you like to generate in the next 6 months, 12 months, or even 2 years?
4. Break the Process into Steps
Building a recurring revenue stream is a journey. Break it down into manageable steps: creating the product or service, setting up billing infrastructure, marketing the offering, and delivering value consistently.
5. Stay Consistent and Focused
Consistency is key. Schedule regular time to work on refining and growing your recurring revenue model. Whether it’s improving customer retention or enhancing the customer experience, staying focused will yield results.
6. Measure, Adjust, and Celebrate
Regularly track your progress. Is your recurring revenue stream meeting expectations? If not, adjust your approach. And don’t forget to celebrate small wins along the way—they will keep you motivated.
By focusing on building a recurring revenue stream, you not only create a more stable business, but you also free up your mind and energy to pursue growth and innovation.
